Are Light Scratches Quality Defects?
When purchasing colored PVC foam board, some buyers may notice very light scratches or handling marks on the surface after unpacking. In most cases, these minor marks do not affect the board's quality, strength or normal application.
Why Do Light Scratches Appear?
Colored PVC foam board is produced, inspected, stacked and packed through several handling processes. Since dark and glossy surfaces show marks more easily than white boards, slight contact during production or packing may leave visible lines under strong light.
Common causes include:
Contact between sheets during stacking
Friction during cutting or packing
Dust particles between board surfaces
Movement during loading and transportation
These marks are usually superficial and do not penetrate the board surface.
What Is Normally Acceptable?
A light surface mark is generally considered acceptable when it:
Can only be seen from certain angles
Does not affect the board thickness
Does not expose or damage the board core
Does not influence cutting, CNC routing or installation
Does not affect the final appearance after normal processing
For boards used in furniture, cabinets, partitions or construction, minor handling marks are often covered during lamination, painting or installation.
What May Be a Quality Problem?
The following conditions should be checked more carefully:
Deep scratches that damage the surface layer
Large dents or impact damage
Cracks, broken corners or damaged edges
Obvious color differences within the same batch
Uneven thickness or serious surface deformation
Marks that remain clearly visible in the finished application
If these problems are found, buyers should provide clear photos, videos and batch information so that the supplier can check the cause.
Special Attention for Glossy Surfaces
Black, grey, dark-colored and high-gloss PVC boards show dust, fingerprints and fine marks more easily. For applications requiring a highly decorative finished surface, protective film is recommended.
Buyers should also inform the supplier of the final application before placing an order. This allows the factory to recommend the appropriate surface, packaging method and protection level.
