What Density Should You Choose for 5mm PVC Foam Board?
A buyer's guide to balancing board rigidity, weight, printing performance and purchasing cost.
For most advertising and display work, the commonly selected density for a 5mm PVC board is between 0.40 and 0.50 g/cm³. A density of 0.45 g/cm³ is often a practical middle choice for general printing, sign making and display production.
However, there is no single density that is best for every order. The right choice depends on the finished sign size, printing method, cutting requirements, handling frequency and target price. Choosing only by the lowest price can result in a board that feels too soft for the intended application.
1. What Does PVC Foam Board Density Mean?
Density describes how much material is contained in a given volume of board. When the thickness and sheet size remain the same, a higher-density sheet normally weighs more and feels firmer. A lower-density sheet is lighter and usually more economical.
Density should not be considered alone. Foam-cell consistency, surface quality, thickness control and production stability also affect how the board performs during printing and cutting. Two sheets marked with the same density may not produce the same result if their internal structure and quality control are different.

3. How Density Changes Sheet Weight and Container Cost
Density changes the weight of every sheet. This matters to importers because a higher sheet weight may reduce the number of boards that can be loaded before the container reaches its permitted payload.

These figures are calculated from nominal size and density. Actual shipment weight includes production variation and packing materials.
A container plan should therefore be calculated after the buyer confirms thickness, density and packing. PE bag, carton and pallet packing have different gross weights and levels of protection. Using one loading quantity for every order can produce inaccurate freight and landed-cost calculations.
4. Does Higher Density Always Give Better Printing?
No. A higher-density board normally feels firmer, but density does not automatically improve ink colour or image resolution. Printing performance also depends on surface smoothness, cleanliness, flatness, ink compatibility and curing settings.
For ordinary rectangular print panels, 0.40 or 0.45 g/cm³ may already meet the application. Paying for 0.50 density is more reasonable when the finished display requires additional rigidity, detailed routing or repeated handling.

5. Match the Density to the Finished Product
Start with the application rather than the technical name of the board. The following questions usually lead to a more useful recommendation:
- What is the finished sign size?
- Will the sheet be printed directly or covered with vinyl?
- Will it remain rectangular or be routed into letters and shapes?
- Is it a short-term display or a product that will be handled repeatedly?
- Will it be used indoors, outdoors temporarily or in an exposed location?
- Is lower unit cost or a firmer board feel more important?

6. What Should Buyers Confirm Before Ordering?
A useful quotation should identify the complete specification, not just "5mm white board." Before confirming a sample or proforma invoice, check:
- Thickness, sheet size and exact density
- White colour and required surface condition
- Printing, mounting, cutting or routing application
- Quantity and whether mixed specifications are needed
- PE bag, carton or pallet packing
- FOB price or destination port for CIF quotation
- Estimated sheets, net weight, gross weight and CBM
