What Is PVC Foam Board? Types, Properties and Applications
A practical guide to PVC foam board, PVC foam sheet and expanded PVC board, including the differences between Free Foam, Celuka and Co-extruded boards.
PVC foam board is a lightweight, rigid plastic sheet made mainly from polyvinyl chloride resin and foaming additives. During extrusion, a fine cellular structure forms inside the sheet. This structure reduces the board's weight while maintaining useful rigidity, moisture resistance and processing performance.
Depending on the country or industry, buyers may also call it PVC foam sheet, expanded PVC board, expanded PVC sheet, plastic foam board, foam PVC sheet or foam core PVC sheet. These terms often refer to the same basic material, although the production process, density and surface quality may be different.
PVC foam board is widely used for advertising signs, UV printing, displays, cabinets, furniture, partitions, interior decoration and other fabrication projects. Buyers can view our PVC Foam Board product range for available sizes, densities and customization options.

Three Main Types of PVC Foam Board
PVC foam boards do not all have the same surface, internal structure or mechanical performance. The three main production types are Free Foam, Celuka and Co-extruded PVC foam board.
| Item | PVC Free Foam | PVC Celuka | Co-extruded PVC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Smooth and matte | Hard outer skin | Dense, smooth and harder surface layer |
| Typical Thickness | 1–10mm | 1.8–30mm | Customized according to requirement |
| Main Advantage | Lightweight and economical | Better rigidity and screw holding | Clean appearance and durable surface |
| Common Uses | Printing, signs and displays | Cabinets, furniture and CNC work | Decorative panels and premium furniture |
1. PVC Free Foam Board
PVC Free Foam Board has a smooth matte surface and a uniform lightweight core. It is generally softer and lighter than Celuka board, making it practical for thin sheet applications.
Common thicknesses include 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm. These sheets are frequently used by advertising companies, printing factories and sign makers for UV printing, screen printing, vinyl mounting, displays and exhibition panels.
More specifications are available on our PVC Free Foam Board category page.
2. PVC Celuka Foam Board
PVC Celuka foam board is produced with a harder outer skin and a fine foamed core. Compared with a low-density Free Foam sheet, Celuka board normally provides better rigidity, surface hardness and screw-holding performance.
It is commonly selected for bathroom cabinets, kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, shelves, partitions, furniture components and CNC-routed panels. Density and surface hardness should be selected according to the final application rather than thickness alone.

3. PVC Co-extruded Foam Board
Co-extruded PVC foam board combines a foamed PVC core with dense outer surface layers. The surface is smooth, bright and harder, providing a clean appearance and better resistance to ordinary handling scratches.
This type is suitable for decorative furniture panels, laminated boards, visible cabinet components and applications requiring a more refined surface. It can also be used for CNC processing, drilling, painting and film lamination.
See our PVC Co-extruded Foam Board range for more details.
Main Properties of PVC Foam Sheet
Lightweight but Rigid
The cellular core makes PVC foam sheet lighter than solid PVC sheet. At the correct thickness and density, it can still provide enough rigidity for signs, displays, furniture parts and interior panels.
Moisture Resistant
PVC foam board does not swell like ordinary MDF after normal exposure to moisture. It is often used in kitchens, bathrooms and other humid indoor areas. However, outdoor suitability should still be evaluated according to installation method, temperature, sunlight and project duration.
Easy to Process
The material can be cut, drilled, routed, engraved and shaped with common woodworking tools or CNC equipment. It can also be fixed with screws, adhesives or suitable mechanical fasteners.
Suitable for Printing and Decoration
White PVC foam sheet offers a smooth base for UV printing, screen printing, painting and vinyl mounting. For printable materials, buyers can also view our Printable PVC Foam Board.
Available with Decorative Lamination
PVC board can be finished with wood-grain, solid-color, marble-look or other decorative films. For cabinet and wardrobe applications, see our Laminated PVC Foam Board.
Common Applications
| Application | Typical Requirement | Suggested Board Type |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising signs | Smooth surface, low weight and printability | Free Foam Board |
| UV printing | Good flatness and consistent white surface | Free Foam or Co-extruded Board |
| Cabinets and wardrobes | Rigidity, screw holding and moisture resistance | Celuka or Co-extruded Board |
| CNC-cut furniture parts | Fine core, stable density and harder surface | Celuka Board |
| Decorative panels | Clean surface or decorative film | Co-extruded or Laminated Board |
| Partitions and interior panels | Lightweight structure and easy installation | Selected according to required strength |
Is Expanded PVC the Same as PVC Foam Board?
In most commercial searches, expanded PVC board, expanded PVC sheet and expanded PVC foam board refer to the same general group of lightweight rigid PVC sheets. The word "expanded" describes the cellular structure created during the foaming process.
However, the name alone does not tell a buyer whether the sheet is Free Foam, Celuka or Co-extruded. Before ordering, buyers should confirm the production process, thickness, density, surface hardness, color, sheet weight and intended application.

How to Select the Right PVC Foam Board
A thicker sheet is not always a stronger or more suitable sheet. Selection should be based on several factors:
- Final application: printing, signage, furniture or decoration
- Required thickness and sheet size
- Density and total sheet weight
- Surface hardness and appearance
- CNC, drilling, screw fixing or lamination requirements
- Indoor, humid or limited outdoor conditions
- Target cost and expected service life

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is PVC foam board a solid plastic sheet?
No. It is a rigid PVC sheet with a fine cellular or foamed internal structure. This makes it lighter than solid PVC while retaining useful rigidity.
2. What is another name for PVC foam board?
Common names include PVC foam sheet, expanded PVC board, expanded PVC sheet, foam PVC sheet, Forex board, Foamex board and PVC sun board. Names vary between countries and industries.
3. Is PVC foam board waterproof?
PVC foam board has very low water absorption and does not swell like ordinary MDF during normal exposure to moisture. The complete installation still needs to be designed for its environment.
4. Which type is suitable for furniture?
PVC Celuka and Co-extruded Foam Board are normally better choices for cabinets and furniture because they provide harder surfaces and better rigidity. Density should be selected according to the structure and screw-holding requirements.
5. Can PVC foam sheet be cut to a customized size?
Yes. Standard sheets and cut-to-size boards can be supplied. Buyers should confirm the finished dimensions, quantity, tolerance and packing method before production.
