Why Are Furniture Manufacturers Choosing 15mm PVC Foam Board?

Why Are Furniture Manufacturers Choosing 15mm PVC Foam Board?

Furniture manufacturers do not always need the thickest panel available. For cabinet sides, internal partitions, bathroom furniture and storage units, 15mm PVC foam board often provides a useful balance between rigidity, weight and cost.

The important question is not simply whether 15mm is "strong enough." Buyers should consider the panel size, density, hardware, support points and finished furniture structure before making a decision.

More Rigid Than Thin Boards

Useful when 10mm panels are too flexible for cabinet sides or vertical partitions.

Lighter Than 18mm

Helps reduce finished furniture weight where heavy-duty construction is unnecessary.

Suitable for Wet Areas

The PVC material does not absorb water in the same way as MDF or other wood-based panels.

Where Does a 15mm Panel Work Best?

A 15mm panel is commonly used for cabinet side walls, vertical dividers, wardrobe interiors, bathroom furniture and utility cabinets. It can also be used for medium-span shelves and CNC-machined furniture parts when the density and support structure are suitable.

It should not be presented as a universal replacement for 18mm material. Large cabinet doors, long unsupported shelves and parts carrying heavy hardware may still require a thicker or higher-density board.

Why Density Matters as Much as Thickness

Two sheets with the same thickness can perform differently if their density, surface hardness and core structure are different. Higher-density material is normally more rigid and provides better support for machining and screw fixing, but it is also heavier and more expensive.

Furniture Application Suggested Density Reason
Cabinet sides and internal partitions 0.55–0.60g/cm³ A practical balance between weight, rigidity and cost
Kitchen and bathroom furniture 0.60–0.65g/cm³ Better rigidity for regular cabinet production
Shelves and CNC furniture parts 0.65–0.70g/cm³ Higher hardness and improved fixing performance

These figures are general recommendations rather than fixed rules. The final selection should take account of the board span, screw type, hardware weight and overall cabinet design.

What Does the Celuka Structure Add?

PVC Celuka board forms a relatively dense outer skin around a foamed core. This gives the panel a smooth surface, useful rigidity and cleaner processing than a very lightweight foam sheet. It can be cut, drilled, routed, engraved and laminated with standard furniture-production equipment.

For most cabinet and furniture projects, a well-controlled Celuka board is a cost-effective choice. When a buyer needs higher surface gloss, improved flatness or a harder outer surface, a PVC co-extruded foam board may be more suitable.

White Board or Laminated Board?

White board is suitable for manufacturers that carry out their own cutting, painting or lamination. It can also be used directly for clean cabinet interiors. Laminated board is a convenient option when the buyer needs a finished woodgrain or solid-color surface.

Kaichuang provides a PDF design catalogue for decorative film selection. Customers may also send a physical film sample. The regular minimum quantity for laminated board is 100 sheets; the minimum for a specially sourced or customized film is confirmed according to the selected design.

What Should Buyers Check Before Ordering?

A product name alone is not enough to compare quotations. Furniture manufacturers and board distributors should confirm the following points:

  • Actual density and acceptable density tolerance
  • Thickness tolerance and panel flatness
  • Finished panel dimensions
  • White, colored or laminated surface
  • CNC, drilling and screw-fixing requirements
  • Packing method and container-loading plan

For Kaichuang's 15mm panel, the thickness tolerance can be controlled within ±0.2mm. Different-density samples are available, and CNC machining or screw-holding tests can be prepared according to the buyer's requirements.

How Can Mixed Loading Reduce Purchasing Risk?

Furniture factories often need more than one thickness or surface finish. Instead of purchasing a full container of only one specification, buyers can combine agreed products in one 20ft container. This makes it easier to test a new 15mm specification while maintaining stock of other commonly used boards.

Loading quantity cannot be stated as one fixed number because it changes with thickness, density, sheet size and packing. Laminated sheets are best packed on strong export pallets to reduce the risk of edge and surface damage during handling and shipment.

Sample support: Regular 10 × 15cm samples are free, while international courier charges are paid by the customer. Sample orders can also be discussed. Standard production time is generally 7–15 days after the order details are confirmed.

So, Should You Choose 15mm or 18mm?

Choose 15mm when you need a stable furniture panel for cabinet sides, partitions, bathroom furniture or supported components without adding unnecessary weight. Choose 18mm for larger doors, long shelves, heavier hardware or structures requiring more rigidity.

The safest approach is to provide the component dimensions, application, fixing method and target market before ordering. Our team can then recommend a practical density and arrange samples for evaluation.
