Is PVC Foam Board the Same as Solid PVC Sheet?

The key difference is inside the sheet.

PVC foam board contains a cellular core. Solid PVC sheet is non-foamed. Density, a glossy face or decorative film cannot identify the structure on their own. Start with the required material, then choose the thickness and finish for the application.

If an inquiry says "Non-Foam", confirm that requirement before quoting. A foam board is not an equivalent substitute simply because the size, thickness and color match.

Within the foamed PVC family, the main structures are:

• Free foam: a cellular PVC sheet; evaluate the grade for the intended printing or fabrication process.
• Celuka: a dense outer skin with a foamed core.
• Co-extruded foam board: separately extruded PVC faces over a foamed core.

Does Higher Density Mean a Solid Board?

No. A high-density PVC foam board is still foamed. Density describes mass per unit volume. It helps calculate weight, but it does not identify a sheet as non-foamed.

For an unlaminated sheet:

Weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³)

For the same nominal 1220 × 2440 × 10mm sheet:

• At 0.55 g/cm³: approximately 16.37 kg.
• At 0.70 g/cm³: approximately 20.84 kg.

These are calculated material weights, excluding packaging. Actual dimensions, density variation and added surface layers affect the result. Neither calculation establishes load capacity.

Three Details to Confirm Before Approving a Sample

Specify the finish and the substrate

"Decorative board" describes appearance. Specify the substrate separately. Confirm whether the film covers one or both faces, whether the faces must match, and whether finished thickness includes the decorative layer.

For edge-banded furniture, a white core may be acceptable beneath colored or woodgrain faces. Confirm this in writing rather than judging from a finished cabinet photograph.

Confirm the actual cutting process

PVC foam board can be mechanically cut, drilled and routed. Trial the actual drawing, including pockets, narrow sections and fixing holes. Inspect the edge finish, exposed core and remaining wall thickness.

Assess flooring as an installed component

For "compact vehicle flooring", clarify whether compact means non-foamed material or a dense board meeting specified properties. Assess support spacing, concentrated loads, wear, slip resistance and fixing details. Required mechanical values and test documents must relate to the proposed material; density and thickness alone do not establish suitability.
